Baler Twine Sizes and Runlength: How to Specify for the Baler and the Crop

Baler twine is one of the few cordage products where the wrong size costs the bale, not the rope. A knot that breaks in the field costs more than a few extra kilograms of good twine, and the difference between a smooth run and a frustrating day is usually the twine being matched to the baler and the crop.

What baler twine is

Modern baler twine is polypropylene split-film twine, twisted to a controlled runlength, wound on a ball or spool sized to the baler’s twine box. The fiber is chosen for low cost, rot resistance and predictable knotting; the runlength is the parameter that sizes the twine to the job.

The three parameters to match

1. Baler type and knotter. Square balers (small and large), round balers, and combined / variable-chamber balers each have their own twine geometry. The twine must run through the knotter without missing a tie. Confirm the make and model in the RFQ.

2. Crop and bale weight. Heavier crops and denser bales need heavier twine (lower m/kg). The relationship is not linear — a small increase in bale density can require a noticeable jump to the next twine size.

3. Storage time. UV-stabilized twine keeps its strength through a season of outdoor storage. Unstabilized twine is fine for bales that go straight to feed or processing, but becomes unreliable for bales that sit in the field.

What to put in the RFQ

  • Baler make and model (or knotter type if known)
  • Crop and approximate moisture
  • Bale weight and density
  • Storage time outdoors
  • Ball or spool weight (commonly 5 kg or 9 kg)
  • Quantity in balls / spools / tonnes
  • Color preference (most programs are natural or beige; some use red or orange for visibility)

A consistent specification across these fields lets the supplier quote a single SKU and lets you compare quotations across suppliers without further clarification.

What m/kg of baler twine should I use for a small square baler?

Small square balers typically use a finer twine in the 200–400 m/kg range, with the exact figure depending on the crop (heavier crops need heavier twine) and the knotter. Round balers usually use a heavier twine in the 100–200 m/kg range. Confirm against the baler manual and the crop, not against general rules.

Does baler twine need to be UV-stabilized?

If the bales will be stored outdoors for any significant time, yes. UV-stabilized twine keeps its knot strength through a season of field exposure; unstabilized twine can become brittle and break when the bale is moved.

What is the difference between 'big bale' and 'small bale' twine?
