Buyers often ask for a diameter because it is the one number everyone knows. But diameter serves three different masters — and strength is only one of them.
The three things diameter actually controls
1. Handling. A rope should fill the hand of the person using it. 4–6 mm disappears in gloved hands; 16 mm+ cannot be knotted quickly. For daily hand-tied work, 6–12 mm is the human-sized range.
2. Hardware fit. Flagpole pulleys, winch drums, cleats, cam cleats and baler knotters are all sized for a rope range. The hardware decides the diameter — check it before you buy. Flagpole halyards are the classic case: the pulley groove wins every argument.
3. Strength and abrasion allowance. All else equal, thicker is stronger — but “all else” rarely is: material and construction move strength more than a few millimeters do. The twine exception
Twine is not specified by diameter alone — use denier/ply (e.g. 210D/12) or diameter + runlength (m/kg). Details in monofilament vs multifilament twine.
