How to Store and Care for Rope, Twine and Cordage

A rope that is stored well will outlast a rope that is stored carelessly, often by a factor of two or more. The enemies in storage are the same as in service — UV light, moisture, heat, chemicals and mechanical damage — but in storage they act slowly and silently, so the damage is usually invisible until the rope is loaded.

UV light

UV is the single biggest cause of premature cordage failure, in service and in storage. Polypropylene is the most vulnerable of the common synthetics, then polyethylene, then polyester. UV-stabilized grades delay the onset of damage but do not eliminate it.

In storage:

  • Keep rope in its original opaque packaging until use
  • Store in shade, never in direct sun through a window
  • Do not store near glass or translucent roofing where concentrated UV reaches the rope
  • For long storage, wrap in opaque black PE sheeting

Moisture and temperature

For synthetic rope, dry storage is preferred but humidity is not catastrophic. Nylon absorbs water slowly and temporarily loses a small fraction of its strength; it recovers on drying.

For natural fiber rope (jute, sisal, cotton, manila), moisture is the most serious problem. Mildew permanently damages the fiber and the rope must be retired. Store natural fiber rope dry, off the floor, and inspected regularly.

For both families, very high temperatures (above 50–60 °C in storage) accelerate aging, especially for synthetics. Cool, dry and shaded is the right rule.

Chemicals

Rope absorbs chemical exposure it is not aware of. The standard list to keep rope away from in storage:

  • Bleach, especially chlorine-based
  • Strong acids and alkalis
  • Solvents (petrol, acetone, paint thinner)
  • Battery acid (forklift charging areas)
  • Pesticides and agricultural chemicals

A short splash that is rinsed off is usually fine; a long soak in an unknown chemical is grounds for retirement.

Mechanical damage in storage

Stored rope is at risk from being dragged, stepped on, run over by forklift trucks, or attacked by rodents. Coiled rope should be coiled neatly (not kinked), supported off the floor, and stored away from the main traffic flow. Sharp hooks or nails in the storage area will cut the rope at load-bearing points.

Inspection before use

Before putting a stored rope into service, walk it end to end. Look for:

  • Cuts, abrasion or glazing on the surface
  • Discoloration, mildew or chemical staining
  • Stiff, brittle or soft spots along the length
  • Variation in diameter (a soft spot or a hard spot)
  • Heat damage (glazing or melted fibers)

For critical applications, retire a rope that shows any of these. For general-purpose cordage, weigh the inspection result against the load and the consequence of failure.

Does UV light really damage stored rope?

Yes — UV is the most common cause of cordage degradation in storage, especially for polypropylene and natural fibers. Direct sunlight through a window or a translucent roof will reduce the service life of an unstabilized rope. Store rope in opaque packaging, in shade, and out of direct sun.

Is humidity a problem for stored rope?

For synthetic rope, humidity is mostly cosmetic — the rope will not rot, but it may pick up surface dust or, in the case of nylon, slowly absorb water and lose a small amount of strength until it dries. For natural fiber rope (jute, sisal, cotton, manila), humidity is a real problem: it promotes mildew, which permanently damages the fiber.

How do I know if a stored rope is still good?

Inspect visually for cuts, abrasion, glazing, discoloration or mildew; feel the rope for stiffness, brittleness or soft spots; and for critical applications, retire a rope that has seen a heavy shock load, prolonged UV exposure or known chemical contact, regardless of how it looks.
