Split-Film vs Monofilament vs Multifilament Twine: What the Yarn Form Changes

PP and PE twine are usually described by their material and their runlength, but the yarn form — the way the basic yarn is made — has more effect on the way a twine actually behaves than the fiber name. Split-film PP and multifilament PP are both “polypropylene twine” and they are not interchangeable.

Split film

Polypropylene is extruded as a thin film, then slit into narrow strips and twisted. The result is a flat twine, slightly rough, with a fibrous edge.

  • Feel. Dry, slightly stiff, fibrous edges. The cheapest feel of the three.
  • Knots. Holds well. The edges grip each other inside the knot.
  • Abrasion. Moderate. The flat profile means wear concentrates at the edges of the film.
  • Cost. Lowest of the three. The standard for packing, baling and agricultural tying where price is the deciding factor.
  • Typical products. PP split-film packing twine, baler twine.

Monofilament

A single round filament of PP or PE, extruded as a continuous thread. The PE version is the global standard for fishing and aquaculture; the PP version is used where a stiffer or cheaper product is acceptable.

  • Feel. Smooth, slightly waxy (PE) or harder (PP). Slides easily through fingers.
  • Knots. Reliable. PE monofilament knots hold without backing in most applications.
  • Abrasion. High — the round profile distributes wear evenly.
  • Cost. Higher than split film. PE is the standard fishing twine.
  • Typical products. PE monofilament fishing twine, PP monofilament industrial twine.

Multifilament

Many fine filaments twisted together to form a single yarn. Softer and more flexible than the other two, with a smooth fabric-like feel.

  • Feel. Soft, smooth, comfortable. Kind to hands over a long working day.
  • Knots. Holds well, but can slip in a poorly dressed knot.
  • Abrasion. Moderate. The fine filaments wear individually but the bundle still works.
  • Cost. Higher than split film and monofilament. The premium choice for hand-feel applications.
  • Typical products. PP/PE multifilament for crop tying, packaging, decorative and craft use.

Choosing between them

  • Packing and baling, price-driven. Split film.
  • Fishing, net repair, aquaculture, abrasion-driven. Monofilament (PE for the standard, PP for the budget option).
  • Crop tying, hand-feel-driven, decorative. Multifilament.

When the buyer does not specify the yarn form, the supplier will assume the default for the application. To compare two quotations fairly, confirm the yarn form on both — the same m/kg in split film and in multifilament is a different product.

What is the difference between split film and monofilament twine?

Which twine is strongest?

For the same material and weight per meter, monofilament is usually the strongest because the cross-section is solid and round. Multifilament is typically the weakest in straight tensile but the most flexible and the most comfortable to handle.

Why does yarn form matter more than material for some applications?

Because the way the yarn is built changes how the twine feels in the hand, how it knots, how it abrades and how it looks. Two PP twines of the same material can behave like completely different products if one is split film and the other is multifilament — and the right choice for a tomato-tying application is not the right choice for a baler.
